Celebrate the city’s artistic bounty at the Artsweek 2016 Launch and Opening Ceremonies! The City of Peterborough, the DBIA and Artsweek invite you to join us for the kick-off of Artsweek and the unveiling of Alex Bierk’s Mural Project, Passing Cloud (2016). Be among the first to see the spectacular Bierk mural, get a sneak peek at some great Artsweek events and enjoy some refreshments.
Artist Statement: Alex Bierk’s mural Passing Cloud is a large-scale, black and white image of clouds printed onto a highly durable outdoor vinyl, which is adhered to 4 x 4 foot aluminum panels that are affixed to the wall. Bierk highlighted the deliberate simplicity and hopefulness of his image Passing Cloud: “The subject matter will speak to both the vulnerability and beauty that I see here, pointing to the ambiguous nature of the site itself, and a future that I am nonetheless deeply invested in.”
Biography: Alex Bierk’s black and white paintings are based on reframed, reworked photographs taken from his everyday. The scenes are characterized by personal themes and tell stories about the acceptance and defiance of the passing of time, regret, displacement, and the formation of identity. Having moved his family back to town where he grew up, Bierk’s recent work picks up on familiar places and memories of youth and escape, loss and longing. His labour-intensive process and use of autobiographical imagery render hyperrealist paintings that are honest but only subtly revealing.
In the past year Bierk, has participated in shows in Toronto, London, New York City, Miami, Copenhagen, Stockholm and Paris. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Art Gallery of Peterborough, the Royal Bank of Canada and the Toronto Dominion Bank as well as in numerous private collections.
Noon at the N.E. Corner of Queen and Simcoe Streets (HELP Paralegal Services parking lot, 114 Simcoe Street).
